Ruwwad al-tanmeya

Ruwwad Egypt is based in the Ezbet Khair Allah area of Caïro. Ruwwad has run a community center here since 2012 and offers scholarships to 50 youth scholars annually in exchange for community services. Sounds of Change trains these youth scholars to use music in their work with children and youth groups.

Ezbet Khair Allah is one of the largest unplanned communities in Egypt. It expands over an area of 2 square kilometers with an estimated population of 700,000, making it one of the largest and most densely populated informal communities in Egypt. Since the 1970’s, migrants from rural areas started building their own wood and tin houses on the rocky hill today known as ‘Ezbah’. The residents of the state-owned land of Ezbah, have been living under the constant threat of having their homes demolished. The 'illegal' status of Ezbah has also deprived it of basic public utilities, like water, electricity and a sewage system. Therefore the residents have organised cooperative distribution of water and electricity around the area.

The mission of Ruwwad Al-Tanmeya is to strengthen initiative and facilitate recovery to problems prioritised by members of deprived communities, through education, youth volunteerism, and grassroots organising. The aim for our training sessions with Ruwwad was to integrate the Sounds of Change approach and activities into the curriculum of Ruwwad, to foster a strong connection, safety, non-violent communication, inter-personal development, and to embrace diversity within the community.
